UNDAF DISTRICT PROFILE: BAITADI

This profile of Baitadi District in the Far-Western Development Region of Nepal was prepared by UN-RCHCO in preparation for the UNDAF 2013-17 implementation cycle. In some areas relevant to the UN and its partners’ work, information is not available at the district level, but this Profile represents a collection of such information based on field research by Dadeldhura Field Coordination Office and centrally accessible documents.

UN RCHCO has prepared UNDAF District Profiles for 23 districts identified as lowest performing on development in the Nepal Country Analysis 2011. People from these districts are among the vulnerable groups whose status will be monitored to assess the impact of the UNDAF 2013-17. The District Profiles provide detailed background information on health services, education, food security, agriculture, employment, gender and social inclusion and other UNDAF areas at local level and can serve as a reference guide to information sources and contact persons relevant to the district.

Transportable Street Art Project

Kiran is drawn to the idea of being able to sustain the traditionally cultural practices, and creating job to sustain one's livelihood after the MDG. Baitadi falls in the farthest western regional district of Nepal, and hosts some of most interesting cultural practices. Influenced by a particular dance called Choliya or Chaliya, unique to the region, he has used the local bagpiper as one of the main characters in the painting. Also, Kiran was impressed by a group of community members dedicated to create their own jobs by starting a cottage industry that produces soap called "Chaulani Soap Industry". The demand for their product has been growing. The mural is Kiran's attempt to portray how we can maintain our cultural practices, and still be open to new ideas and techniques to move forward.
