International Labour Organization - ILO

Date of inception: January 1994

Programme priorities
The ILO activities and programmes are concentrated on the following major areas:
i) poverty alleviation through employment promotion;
ii) improvement of industrial relations and labour administration;
iii) elimination of child and bonded labour; and
iv) improvement of working conditions, occupational safety and health at work places and promotion of social protection. Gender mainstreaming is a key strategy for gender equality.
The following ILO-executed programmes are ongoing in Nepal:
1. Time Bound Programme (TBP) on the Elimination of the Worst Forms of Child Labour
2. Prevention of HIV/AIDS in the World of Work in Nepal
3. Capacity Building of Employers' Organizations in Productivity and Competitiveness
4. Sustainable Elimination of Bonded Labour in Nepal
5. Combating Child Trafficking for Labour and Sexual Exploitation
6. Extending Social Protection to Workers in the Informal Economy
7. Community Action for the Elimination of Child (bonded) Labour from Exploitative and Hazardous Work Type of assistance and programming

Type of Assistance and Programming:
The ILO formulates international labour standards in the form of Conventions and Recommendations setting minimum standards of basic labour rights: freedom of association, the right to organise, collective bargaining, abolition of forced labour, equality of opportunity and treatment, and other standards regulating conditions across the entire spectrum of work related issues.It provides technical assistance primarily in the fields of vocational training and vocational rehabilitation; employment policy; labour administration; labour law and industrial relations; working conditions; management development; co-operatives; social security; labour statistics and occupational safety and health. It promotes the development of independent employers' and workers' organizations and provides training and advisory services to those organizations. Within the UN system, the ILO has a unique tripartite structure with workers and employers participating as equal partners with governments in the work of its governing organs.
