Canadian International Development Agency/Canadian Cooperation Office - CIDA/CCO

Date of Inception
The Canadian Cooperation Office (CCO) in Kathmandu was established in July 1987.

Program Priorities
Community health, livelihoods, good governance, peace building are the focus of CIDA programming in Nepal with the possibility to linking support to the government in medium to longer term. Environment, gender equality and social inclusion are cross cutting themes. In the current environment of democratic transition and post conflict peace building CIDA has been supporting awareness raising and capacity building of people of Nepal on issues of constitutional assembly and constitution making process in Nepal

Type of Assistance and Programming

Globally CIDA's program is based on the Millennium Development Goals, to which it contributes through the following four key areas:
Social development: Basic education, child protection, health and nutrition, HIV/AIDS.
Economic well-being: Economic growth and improved living standards for the poor through a renewed focus on agricultural development and private sector development.
Environmental sustainability: Protection, conservation, and management of the environment.
Governance: Human rights, democracy and good governance.
 In all areas of CIDA's work, equality between women and men is promoted and supported.

CIDA in Nepal has been managing a bilateral assistance program through Memorandum of Understandings (MOUs) between the Government of Nepal and Government of Canada. CIDA’s major development assistance flows through the bilateral mechanism and reflects the Canadian presence and interest in Nepal. The bilateral program is generally delivered through Canadian Executing Agencies (CEAs) and Local Executing Agencies (LEAs). Some funding has also been mobilized through UN agencies.

Organization Picture
The CIDA Partnership Branch delivers specific projects through Canadian non-governmental organizations, academic institutions and private sectors in partnership with relevant Nepali organizations.

Canada also provides support to Nepal through its multilateral aid to World Food Program, the United Nations Development Program, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), OHCHR, OCHA, the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank and through INGOs in peace building front. This is done through CIDA’s Multilateral Branch.

Geographical Focus

The Canadian Cooperation Office in Kathmandu is the only national presence of Canada in Nepal. CIDA/CCO projects are both directive and responsive and are open to any geographic targeting based on the poverty reduction and social development priorities. CIDA implements its program and projects through Canadian and Nepali organizations at the national, district and local levels.
